What Is Bibimbap?비빔밥 · bibimbap

What is it?

"Bibim" means mixed and "bap" means rice: a bowl of rice topped with namul (seasoned vegetables), often beef and a fried or raw egg, with gochujang chili paste. Jeonju is its most famous home; dolsot bibimbap is served sizzling in a hot stone bowl so the rice crisps.

How to eat it

  1. Add gochujang a little at a time — it can be spicy.
  2. Mix thoroughly with the spoon (not chopsticks) before eating.
  3. In a stone bowl, leave it a minute so the bottom rice crisps.
