Frozen Kimbap냉동김밥 · naengdong gimbap

What is it?

In 2023 a Korean-made frozen kimbap (the US label spells it "kimbap"; the official romanization is "gimbap") sold out at Trader Joe's and turned a humble lunch roll into a global K-food hit. In Korea people eat gimbap fresh, rolled to order at gimbap shops and markets.

How to eat it

  1. Frozen kimbap: microwave in its wrap (follow the pack) so the rice turns soft again.
  2. Fresh kimbap is best eaten the same day — rice hardens in the fridge.
  3. Ask for it without ham or egg if you are vegetarian.
